Eye enhancement services such as eyelash extensions, lash lifts, and tinting are much more than just a trend—they are now an integral part of salon service menus. We had the pleasure of asking Julien Benguigui, Co-Director of Misencil Europe, a few questions, and he shared his insights and recommendations to ensure that lashes hold no secrets for you.
YOU HAVE A GLOBAL VIEW OF THE MARKET. ARE EYE ENHANCEMENT SERVICES JUST A PASSING TREND THAT WILL ONE DAY DISAPPEAR?
Even before the health crisis, eye enhancement services were experiencing absolutely staggering growth. We saw the expansion of specialized franchise networks, social media trends focusing on eyebrow enhancement, a surge in interest for hyper-natural permanent makeup techniques, and esthetic schools incorporating "eye enhancement" into their curricula...
Then the health crisis hit, and of course, it shifted clients' priorities regarding their choice of treatments and makeup. But among the big winners were undoubtedly eye enhancements! Thanks to (or because of) mask-wearing, and also due to the lack of makeup during months spent at home, women were tempted to try services that would save them time in the morning: eyelash extensions, lash lifts, eyebrow tinting...
According to our studies with our network of over 5,000 distributors in France and 2,000 in Canada, eye enhancement services are among those that have seen the most growth in recent months, especially during the summer. But that’s not all: our partners confirm that clients are becoming increasingly loyal over time!
WHAT IS MOST IMPORTANT IN AN EYE ENHANCEMENT SERVICE: TECHNIQUE OR PRODUCTS?
The quality of the service and, above all, client satisfaction depend on three key factors:
-
Your Technique: Even in cooking, the best ingredients won’t help if the chef doesn’t know how to use them properly! Proper training is essential. Whether in-person, e-learning, or a mix of both, everything is available today. The most important thing is that you feel comfortable and confident. The brand you work with should be able to support you quickly and simply.
-
Technical Products: Even the greatest chefs select the best ingredients. Whether you prioritize natural products, items made in France or Europe, those with excellent Yuka ratings, or cruelty-free options, remember: the eyes are precious. Don’t judge a product by its packaging alone, but ensure it includes essential information like the expiration date after opening (the famous 6M or 12M in an open-tube logo), the batch number, the country of manufacture, usage instructions, and that the information is provided in both French and English.
-
Client Aftercare: This is often underestimated. Just like a chef’s plating and serving suggestions, what your client does at home matters. For example, we had a case this summer where a client thought her lashes weren’t lasting, only to find out she was applying sunscreen oil to her face right after leaving the salon. Oil and its derivatives are the worst enemies of eyelash extensions!
In truth, we often say that 50% of the work is done in the salon, and the remaining 50% depends on what happens after the service. Using compatible products, following recommendations, and adapting small habits are crucial for perfect, long-lasting results.
WHAT ARE THE RISKS OF USING CHEAP PRODUCTS, BOTH IN TERMS OF IMMEDIATE RESULTS AND LONG-TERM EFFECTS?
In our daily work, we strive for the best efficiency, the most effective techniques, and the most economical or natural solutions. But above all, our extensive research aims to minimize harmful or undesirable effects. Some products may deliver good results in the short term but won’t protect you from the unexpected or help you address client concerns, especially as clients become more discerning and brand-conscious.
In the long term, an unsatisfied client is a lost client—one who is disappointed and won’t hesitate to spread negative word-of-mouth. This is what will cost you the most. So yes, paying a little more for quality products will save you from losing clients in the long run. Did you know that 74% of consumers consider word-of-mouth a key factor in their purchasing decisions (source: NIELSEN)? In other words, being confident in your tools will almost automatically increase your clientele through their satisfaction.
For lashes and even eyebrows, improper applications or unsuitable products can hinder normal growth. The result? You won’t be able to repeat the service because the lashes are too fragile or haven’t grown enough. On the flip side, using the right products, like a daily lash protector, can extend the life of eyelash extensions by at least a week.
WHAT ARE THE MAIN MISTAKES MADE DURING EYE ENHANCEMENT SERVICES?
-
Poor Diagnosis: Not listening to your client before the service gives you a 110% chance of getting the wrong result. The extra 10% is for the negative feedback they’ll share.
-
Underestimating Hygiene: Without revisiting our current situation, the most beautiful service won’t last if simple hygiene precautions aren’t followed.
-
Playing Chemist: Protocols are designed for products to work together with specific, adapted, and established procedures. Mixing products, pigments, lotions, adhesives, or needles from different suppliers is strongly discouraged. Unexpected reactions can occur, as these products weren’t designed to work together. While it might be tempting to substitute a product for a cheaper alternative, it’s not the time for experimentation when your client is lying down.
CAN WE RELY ON A SINGLE TRAINING FOR LASH LIFTS, TINTING, AND EXTENSIONS, OR IS REGULAR TRAINING ESSENTIAL?
Every case is unique, but in my opinion, you can’t deliver the best service if you’re not 100% confident in every step of the process. You need training that suits you, personalized follow-up, and, if necessary, coaching or refresher courses.
Additionally, products and techniques evolve, so it’s important to stay informed. Keep learning, attending conferences, and staying curious. As Steve Jobs said, “Stay hungry.” This mindset will drive you to deliver the best services, offer new options to your clients, and avoid resting on your laurels.
For example, in eyelash extensions, advanced training can help you work faster (both literally and figuratively). My advice: aim for 1-2 training sessions per year. Consistency and dedication will be your best allies.
WHAT MESSAGE WOULD YOU LIKE TO SHARE WITH ALL ESTHETICIANS ABOUT EYE ENHANCEMENT SERVICES?
Take the leap! For your revenue growth, to keep delighting your clients, for your personal development, and because now is the time.
There’s never been a better time than now. Whether your main competitor is already offering these services or not, doing so will set you apart or simply prove that you’re capable too. If you’re more comfortable with lash lifts, start there. Look for more effective products, longer-lasting tints, and set your goals: how many clients, how much time, and when your next training will be.
