LES EXTENSIONS DE CILS : UNE CARRIÈRE À PART ENTIÈRE
The eyelash extension industry is a young industry that is about fifteen years old when compared to the esthetic industry that has evolved over centuries. Yet this industry has had a 15% increase in revenues and international eyelash care from 2016 to 2018 (Business of Fashion, 2018). You will understand that its rapid progression makes many people curious and many try their luck by wanting to get their share of the cake. Like all offers and requests, some offer the low end, others offer the high end, through all the declinations from high end at low end price, from low end at high end price, etc… But when the time comes to train, how do you make sure you’re on the right track?
MY CARRER PATH
Because of my curiosity, discovering new artistic abilities was a personal mission. After establishing myself as a professional wedding make-up artist, I was looking for a complementary treatments that would occupy my free weekdays since the events were mostly on weekends.
I was first trained in eyelash extensions by a colleague who had to leave her clients with me during her maternity leave. My training was disjointed in time and I had my baptism by fire by making my first client, which propelled my passion. For a few years, I tried various brands of glues at all prices, eyelash extensions and gadgets all promising to be the new evolution in eyelash extensions.
It wasn’t until I joined the ranks of one of the big companies that pioneered the industry that I discovered another world of information and research & development that finally came to answer questions that multiple products couldn’t offer me.
In addition, I started to follow multiple trainings in order to develop my critical sense, to create my knowledge scheme and to consolidate my expertise. Combined with my 11 years’ experience in sports coaching and 19 in the beauty field, this has allowed me to occupy a position that today allows me not only teach and improve existing application procedures, but also to create new ones in order to contribute to the evolution of the industry as training director at Misencil Eyelash Extensions.
My course in eyelash extensions is spread over 9 years. Today, thanks to technology, information is much more accessible so there is no need to wait almost a decade to find and learn the best of what exists. On the other hand, you still have to be patient and consistent.
Let me explain. Patient, because of learning a new technical skill that requires dexterity takes devotion to constant practice. What is also important to know is that today, there are what I would call three levels of competence in eyelash extensions:
1 Classic 1-on-1 WHICH IS THE BASIS
2 THE VOLUME TECHNIQUE THAT REQUIRES A GOOD MASTERY OF THE BASE
3 THE MEGA VOLUME TECHNIQUE THAT REQUIRES GOOD VOLUME CONTROL
Each level being dependent on the previous one, you must have the patience to master each level and the conherence to follow them in order to move on to the next one. Mastering each step can take more than 6 months depending on the person’s technical ability and practice ethic.
That said, beware of those who claim to be able to train you on 2 levels in 2 days. Yes you will get the information, but you will have assimilated more information than your technical dexterity will allow you to execute and you will risk giving up quickly because of a lack of confidence. Instead, opt for training that offers you a few days of training per stages as well as ongoing technical and professional support throughout your career.
THE VARIOUS CAREER PATHS
Once you have mastered the first level, several avenues are open to you. The role of technician, of course, can allow you to earn very well when your rates are well established. Tip: set your prices according to your quality of service and the type of clientele you want to have.
For the past few years, eyelash extensions competitions have been sprouting up around the world, making it possible to compare one’s skill level with other local or international artists. This avenue allows you to surpass yourself technically in your career, but also adds notoriety to your brand. Some use the exposure these competitions provide to propel their careers to other avenues such as training and product distribution. Tip: don’t wait until you’re sure of your work before participating. Use the feedback from the judges to improve and reach the ranking goal.
To become a trainer, you will need not only a mastery of technique, but also a proven pedagogical approach. Managing the learning curve of others requires a love of sharing knowledge and an ability to modulate the way you teach according to the student and her way of learning. In addition, having a complete curriculum approved by Health Canada will legitimize your approach. Tip: Become an apprentice to a trainer who will be willing to share her knowledge with you for a good period of time to understand the dynamics.
CHOOSE YOUR CARREER PATH
Whatever path you choose to take, take the time to master each step of your weaving apprenticeship. The more you build your experience on a strong foundation, the more comfortable you will be in the next steps.
Be curious! Keep a constant watch on artists who inspire you, not for comparison, as example, to create your own path. Don’t hesitate to exchange with other technicians to get the pulse of their reality and their perception. This way, you will create a critical and informed view of your industry at all times and you will be better equipped to contribute to it. Don’t forget that you will take away as much as you have contributed.
